Hey y'all, it's AirForceVirgin, or as I'm also known-- AFV. This blog is a catharsis for me; I write about it all. Politics, current events, daily life, stupid/ignorant people-- it's all here.

I'm a Texas native, and I am actually in love with my state. At the moment, however, I am living with my adorable husband, Justin, on a military base in Oklahoma while he serves in the Air Force. We have been through one 5 month deployment during 2008, are currently going through another that will end hopefully in January of 2010.

I'm currently pursuing a degree in Communications with concentrations in political science and economics. One day I will be in the press room at the White House, asking questions and getting to the real issues that the masses want to know about.

I characterize myself as laid-back and down-to-earth, so feel free to leave comments or messages, and I'll try to get back to them as soon as possible <--- that sure sounded like an answering machine message, didn't it?

I've been a Xanga Addict for over five years (albeit under different usernames), and I'm still going strong. I appreciate having this as an outlet for my ramblings, and hope that this site lives on for many years to come.

Backseat Drivers Anonymous

Hello, my name is AFV, and I'm a Backseat Driver. Admitting this is the first step to recovery.

I'm not a control freak in any sense of the word; I'm not particular about any of my possessions, I have no qualms about lending out books, clothes, or movies. I don't count calories or fat grams, my notes for class are not meticulously written, nor are they organized very well. I'd venture to say that I'm one of the most laid-back people you'll ever meet, and as a matter of fact, my husband says that's one of the things that attracted him to me; I was different from other girls in that I was able to go-with-the-flow and deal with things by saying, "Eh, oh well."

However.

Flying down the highway at 70 MPH shoves every ounce of calm and rational thinking that I possess right out the window, and ushers in bucketfuls of nerves, tension, and abrasiveness. During every curve we round, I can be found clinging to the side of the car, gripping the safety handles, and triple-checking that my seatbelt is securely in place. If we come within six car lengths of another vehicle my abdomen muscles start to clench, and I begin pushing back into my seat with my heels, silently stepping on an invisible brake in an attempt to get my husband's attention... and oh boy, it works.

Honestly though, he takes my subtle (ha) body movements as a lack of trust in his driving skills, which is entirely untrue. Cliche as this sounds, I really do trust him, but it's the other people on the road I don't trust. I always hated when my mother used that line on me when I was younger.

"Why can't I go to Teen Night at this club in Dallas on a Sunday night?"
"It's not safe."
"Don't you trust me?"
"I trust you, I don't trust everyone else."

I'm sure she did trust me, just like I trust my husband. I just have an irrational fear of dying in a firey car crash on the side of a highway, or falling off an overpass while taking the curve, and my body language is going to reflect those fears of its accord; I am powerless over those actions.

Still, those simple gestures are not what sends my husband over the edge, flipping out about my lack of trust; no, no, the only control issues I have ever possessed are manifested inside the hunk of metal flying down the highway, and I have specific rules as to what is allowed to go on inside.

First of all, music will not be blared, and I'd prefer he not listen to hard rock while driving ont he highway. The arguments that have been spurred on by this rule of mine are countless. My husband is a major Pantera/Bullet For My Valentine/Black Label Society fan, and he does not take kindly to having them turned down to a dull roar in any situation-- as he says, they're meant to be screamed. I'm sorry, but I don't see how you can concentrate on the road with that racket blaring in your ears. It's not safe, and he has never been able to get me to back down from this, no matter how many times he calls me "grandma". I'm one hot looking grandma, I'll tell you that.

I like to have about 10-15 car lengths between us and the cars in front of us, as well as the cars behind us. It takes a little bit of tweaking and work, but you can find a speed where you are the only car within a half of mile, save for the cars that pass you. This is my ideal spot on a highway, and it seems the safest. If I see an accident occurring up ahead, I have plenty of time to take precautionary measures. Husband doesn't have the patience to find this perfect balance, and he finds it to be a waste of time and energy, and this usually results in me turning into a ball of nerves, biting my nails and wringing my hands.

We cannot make long trips in the dark, or in the rain. Before I plan a trip home, I always check the weather forecast and if there is heavy rain due to fall either on the trip there or back, we do not go. I've been known to cancel plans because storms have cropped up, and it doesn't bother me in the least. I'd rather push back a visit than spend months in the hospital in a coma because we hydroplaned and hit an 18-wheeler. On that same note, we do not drive home in the dark. Basically, if I can't see 5 miles ahead of my car, it's not going to happen.

Maybe I am a grandma, and maybe I am being irrational and ridiculous, but as the old adage goes, "It's better to be safe than sorry." Or dead.

See, irrational! I know this about myself, I own this, and I'm not going to change.

After a particularly stressful 250 mile trip home from our parents house, I told Husband that at least he has found a flaw in me, because it was getting awfully hard to continue letting him believe I was perfect. He informed me, with a smile, that ship had sailed a long time ago.

Does driving bother anyone else, or am I the only one who will most likely be done driving at the age of 55 because the stress will be too much to bear?

@nomdeinternet -  You're right, I would hate riding with you. Slow and steady is my motto.

I am a horrible backseat driver. I tend to gasp a lot to make my point made. I also hate driving in the rain, snow and at night. This makes no sense to me, but there it is. I've never been a fan of blaring music from the car.

I have an irrational fear of dying in a car too.. or causing an accident. But it has actually prevented me from getting my drivers license! at least you drive. i have to work on that. i'm the same with the music, but i'm that way with music in general. i'm a nervous passenger and i do definitely give out "tips" to my husband at times... haha he always says "when you drive, you can have an opinion here".

my dogs growing up would eat until they got sick if it wasn't controlled haha so i'm used to the "feed them twice a day" thing. a lot of small dog owners don't do this but you actually are "supposed" to. it just lets them know that they need to eat when there's food down not just whenever they feel like it but yeah it also controls how much they eat. i always feel sad when i see over weight dogs since it really puts a damper on how active they can be... so i definitely like to keep Forrest in good shape!

he doesn't have to get the top of his hair cut every week because it can be up to 3in but the sides, yes. they have to be kept quite short. i thought it was insane at first but now i'm used to it. haha

i trust my bestfriend's driving skills but not others on the road. often i would act as a lookout for her, and it did get on my nerves seeing other cars taking over the lanes too fast. it made me shudder.

I just prefer to be in control of any vehicle I am in. However, it would appear that from your description of your husband's driving that I have a very similar style of driving to his.

I'm not as extreme as you are--I drive with the music on loud, while singing--I do get your fears.  It took my ex-husband about 5 years to get me to quit squeaking every time I thought we were potentially going to die (we obviously never did).  Now I do the Monk-touch thing, where I tough the metal frame above the top of the window.  The more I touch it, the more anxious I am, and the driver can take the more subtle hint from me.  And apparently, squeaking is more distracting than whatever I thought was distracting them from keeping me alive in the first place.

The driving at night and crappy weather has to happen eventually, if you ever plan on having children, as Murphy's Law dictates that most of their events must occur at night and whenever there's a storm. Or when it's cold enough to convince bears they should continue hibernating.

Just fyi...it should be car 'lengths', not 'links'.  Feel free to ignore my inner editor.

I drive safe. Just do not talk to me to the point I get all hyper and excited or something 'cause then I'll be distracted. But I know what you mean about being a backseat driver. I have plenty of guy friends who have driven for me and 'o-m-f-goodness' is all I have to say.

I was just talking about this with my cousin yesterday. She sucks at driving and directions so we ended up going the longest route possible to get home. So I said, "I don't know what it is, but I just like to get places as quickly as possible. Not by speeding, but by the shortest route. I also get frustrated when people don't drive how I like." Whenever I complain that my other cousin should have went a different way because it's faster she always says, "are you in a hurry?" and it's not that I'm in a hurry (most of the time), I just don't like wasting time.

My name is KP, and I am a back seat driver.

I don't freak out like you, but it's hard to refrain from telling people how to drive.

Snerk. This is funny. I am pretty 'meh' about other people's driving. Unless, it is my dad...my dad is just scary driving. 1) He was in a really bad car crash which resulted in extensive brain damage, 2) he does things like back off a freeway onramp that he took, 3) Go 92 mph...on the Grapevine...downhill, then nearly drive us off of a cliff. Yeeeah.

Therefore, I refuse to ride in a car he is driving. One time we were going to church, mom didn't feel like driving, and dad was driving. I said, "Either mom drives or I stay home." I stayed home, and boy was I pissed. I don't like missing church.

This made me smile.

I can be a bad backseat driver. However, I just tend to grip my own hands or do a small stomp on the floor when I wish they'd break already.

Flying down the highway at 70 MPH...

You call that flying????!?!??  I have a 1999 Toyota Tercel, hardly a car that efficiently and smoothly can reach high speeds. Yet, I often hit 90 MPH if not more. You can feel the wind rocking me from side to side, and the steering wheel shaking. Yeah!!!

It's flying in my world, trust me. I have never, and will NOT EVER hit 80 MPH... it's just not something I well ever encounter!

I despise driving. So I probably won't be driving at 55.

@TheBigShowAtUD -  You say that now, but I promise you, I'm a very nit-picky person when it comes to driving. Basically, my husband can do nothing right when it comes to holding onto the steering wheel.

Thank you!! It really helps hearing that. My stomach has always been my problem area (arms too) so I'm particularly hard on that part of my body. I seem to do about 300 at once, take a small break and then do 200. Key is to work all parts of your stomach though, don't only do plain ol' situps. Maybe I should make a video of different types of situps, haha, just because I do soo many different kinds. Good luck!!

i forgot to mention i hate riding with most people... they drive so fast!! at least jake doesn't do that, haha. i do hate that our car is a piece of crap and makes weird noises though, makes me nervous!

FYI, when you do that, "I'm pushing on my invisible brake!" thing, and you get in an accident, you can get your ankle bones shoved all the way up your leg and cause more problems than anything else.
But anyhoozles, I think men are naturally more comfortable in cars that women. I dunno, though; I've never been that stressed out in a car, except when I was driving with someone my own age.

Aww don't feel bad hon. I'm 38 and don't have my drivers license. At least you do drive. I feel bad that I can't get over my phobia. My husband just shrugs it off and says that we couldn't afford a second vehicle and the insurance anyway.
